CITY (NewsDakota.com)–The Lisbon Broncos scored 36 unanswered points before halftime en route to a 42-12 dismantling of the Valley City Hi-Liners in the third annual Sandbag Bowl in Lisbon Friday night.
The Broncos scored four touchdowns from 40 yards out or greater to take a 36-6 halftime lead, and never looked back, winning the Volunteer Trophy for the third straight year, and evening their regional record at 2-2, moving to 4-2 overall.
Valley City dropped to 2-4 overall, 0-4 in Region I play, and had their hopes at a playoff berth all but wiped out with the loss.
The Hi-Liners struck first, scoring their first points with the starting offense since their game at Dickinson Trinity in week two. After pinning Lisbon deep with an early defensive stand, Valley City started their opening drive at the Bronco 36, and Joey Halgrimson scored on a two-yard run for a 6-0 Hi-Liner lead.
Lisbon turned the short-field table three possessions later, taking over at the Hi-Liner 39, with Tyler Mittleider dashing in from 19 yards out. Hunter Mairs ran in the conversion for an 8-6 Bronco lead with 1:52 left of the first quarter.
The rout was built in the second frame. Lisbon scored four times, first on a 40-yard toss from Mittleider to Nick Anderson, then on a 49-yard run by Nathan Mangin, and on a third-straight possession on an 88-yard sprint by Mairs. On the ensuing Hi-Liner possession, Anderson would pick off a Austin Svenningson pass and run 87 yards for a score and a 36-6 Bronco lead.
Halgrimson scored again for Valley City in the third quarter, capping a 13-play, 60-yard drive. Bronco junior Jace Berg scored with 2:35 left of the game for a 42-12 final score.
The Broncos face Central Cass in Lisbon next week, while the Hi-Liners host defending champion Fargo Shanley.
