Mayville, N.D…In an effort to spark his team offensively, Jimmie head football coach Bud Etzold decided to take his head set and knowledge from the side lines up to the coaches box in the press box on Saturday in Mayville, and the move was productive, as the Jimmies piled up 443 yards of offense, and knocked off the Comets 35-13.
The Jimmies scored on their first three possessions in the first half, and built a 21-13 halftime lead. Jimmie Senior QB Brad Lint came out on fire, completing 13-15 in the first 30 minutes, including three touchdown strikes. Lint hooked up with TE Joe McLaughlin on a one yard toss to get the Jimmies even at seven with 3:06 remaining in the first quarter.
Lint hit Senior receiver Casey Hausauer on a 38 yard post to put the Jimmies up for good, 14-7 with :08 remaining in the first quarter. The Roseburg, Oregon native was able to connect on his third TD pass of the first half when he hooked up with Junior RB Lance Johansen on a 12 yard screen pass to pay dirt with 4:46 to go in the first half. Lint finished the game 20-25 for 231 yards
Jamestown got the ball first to start the second half, and Johansen finished off a 61 yard drive with a one yard plunge to build the margin to 28-13. The Devils Lake talent sealed the deal when he bolted 89 yards for his third touchdown of the game just 23 seconds into quarter number four. Johansen ended up with 127 yards on 10 carries.
After giving up 164 yards of offense in the first half, the Jimmie defense stiffened and held the Comets to only 58 yards in the second half. Etzold liked what he saw from his team on both sides of the ball “We played a complete game, offense, defense, special teams. I am happy. Our QB was pretty much flawless. I was pleased with the protection we gave him.”
Etzold also had praise for his tailback Johansen, “He’s a grinder, and he can be explosive.” Jamestown improves to 2-2 over-all, and 1-1 in the DAC. Mayville slips to 3-2, and 0-1 in the conference.
Next up for the Jimmies is a trip to Valley City to battle the rival Vikings on Saturday, October 1st at 1:00 p.m.. This will be the first of two meetings between these teams, as they will also battle at Greeno Field in late October.”They have a lot of talent with their skill players.” says Etzold, “Anytime we play them, it’s exciting.”
The game is labeled the “Paint Bucket” game, as annually the two teams play for bragging rights, and the paint bucket trophy. Listen for the broadcast on AM 1400, KQDJ, 97.1 FM, and newsdakota.com with Mark McKenzie and Bill Nold, starting with the pregame show at 12:30 p.m..
