S.D.- No one was really sure what would take place on the field in Britton, South Dakota on Friday night, as the Oakes High School Football team played their first game of the 2011 Season.
Needless to say, by night’s end, the coaches, players and fans of the Tornadoes were pleasantly surprised.
Two touchdown throws, a long second half drive by parts of the second team offense, as well as outstanding defensive play in the red zone allowed Oakes to win their opening contest 20-0 over the Britton-Hecla Braves.
“We weren’t really sure what we were going to see tonight, but overall, I couldn’t be more proud of the kids.” said first year Oakes head coach Greg Dobitz. “We still have to work on the little things, but we played a good team in a good conference out there tonight, and what can you say about our red zone defense. Simply solid.”
That red zone offense stopped the Braves three times out of three from first and goal inside the Tornado five yard line.
Next up for Oakes (0-0 Region I, 1-0 Overall) is a contest with the big boys in the region from Linton-HMB. Pregame from Linton is set for 6:30 next Friday night, and kickoff is at 7 p.m. Friday on KDDR-AM 1220 and NewsDakota.com.
