CITY (NewsDakota.com)–The Hi-Liners strung together an impressive drive, capitalized on two big Carrington turnovers, and applied plenty of pressure in an 18-0 win in their football opener.
Greg Dyck was the breakout star of the offense for Valley City, finding the endzone on runs of three and 18 yards. He carried six times for 34 yards, including the three yard finisher, during a 12 play, 78 yard drive that resulted in the only score of the opening half.
The Hi-Liners fumbled the ball three times in the opening minutes of the second half, but survived with two defensive stands and the gift of a Cardinal penalty on a fumbled punt that was to set Carrington up that the Hi-Liner 20.
It was Carrington that saw their mistakes cost them. A Cole Hendrickson pass ended up in the hands of Hi-Liner defender Brandon Heck, which gave the Hi-Liners the ball at the Cardinal 18.
After a Hi-Liner penalty, quarterback Ben Sorenson would cap a nine-play march with a three-yard score for a 12-0 Hi-Liner lead.
A Cardinal holding penalty negated a long touchdown pass from Hendrickson to Lane Anderson, a play that would have cut the lead to a single score. Carrington would later fumble a screen pass, with Valley City recovering at the Cardinal 22.
Dyck would get his second score of the night on the ensuing drive, running 18 yards to the corner of the endzone for the final points of the night.
Valley City’s defensive line was brilliant. They sacked Hendrickson six times, with sophomore Spencer Meyer leading the effort.
The Hi-Liners travel to Dickinson Trinity next Friday night, while the Cardinals host Griggs-Barnes County.
