CITY (NewsDakota.com)–In their second year of Class “B” baseball, Wahpeton Post 20 has claimed a date in the state tournament.
Post 20 grabbed a 6-4 win over Kindred Saturday to win the Section 1 championship and the section’s berth in the state tournament.
The game punctuated a run of high drama in the final days of the tournament, with two teams playing late into the night on Friday just to decide Wahpeton’s opponent.
Kindred bested Enderlin 9-8 in nine innings after Enderlin rallied with three runs in the top of the seventh to send the game to extras tied at 7-7. Enderlin then took a late lead of 8-7 in the top of the ninth.
A two-run double by Kindred in the bottom half of the inning won the game in walkoff fashion, and sent them on to face Wahpeton needing two wins to advance to state.
The game was the second drama-filled game for Enderlin of the day. They entered the bottom of the seventh against Valley City down 4-3, but 14-year-old Spencer Gillund won the second-straight game for Enderlin with a single that ended a two-run rally for the win.
Gillund had the winning hit in a Thursday matchup with Fairmount-Hankinson to send Enderlin on to Friday.
Wahpeton, however, watched all the drama unfold from the stands, as they earned the free pass to Saturday after three straight wins to start the tournament. A rested Post 20 team ended the finals in one game, when they needed to be beaten twice.
A year ago, Wahpeton was in the same situation, but lost both title games to Valley City on the final day in Fairmount.
Wahpeton will join six other sectional champions and host-team Bottineau at the state tournament starting Wednesday.
