CITY, ND – A fire destroyed a cargo trailer west of Valley City Saturday morning just before 5 o’clock.
The Highway Patrol says the driver of a truck hauling two cargo trailers says he saw smoke near the rear axle of one of the trailers and pulled over onto the shoulder of the road.
The driver 42 year-old David Manwiller of Bismarck attempted to extinguish the fire but was unable to contain it and it quickly consumed the trailer and contents inside.
Sergeant Tom Herzig says the driver was able to disconnect the truck and lead trailer containing general freight and 4,500 pounds of batteries. Manwiller saved the batteries from being consumed in the fire.
The patrol say westbound traffic was diverted around the scene for about 90 minutes before the fire was extinguished and the scene cleared. No injuries were reported.
