Hankinson, ND--After their second two-hour road trip in as many days, the Hi-Liners won an eventful game against Hankinson 70-68 on Saturday night.
The two teams got off to a fast start offensively and Hankinson held a 14-11 lead after the first quarter. In the second, Valley City took their first lead of the game at 20-19. Hankinson responded with a 13 unanswered points to take a 12-point lead and they eventually extended it to a 14-point lead. The Pirates led 39-26 at halftime.
The Hi-Liners came out firing in the second half, scoring 12 of the first 16 points, cutting the lead to 43-38 with 5 minutes left in the third. Shane Ost put on a shooting clinic in the second half, hitting three of his four 3-pointers including one that cut the lead to 52-51. The Pirates made a basket to take a 54-51 lead into the fourth quarter.
Then Tony Van Dyke took over. He gave the Hi-Liners their first lead since the second quarter as he hit a 3-pointer to make it 62-59. Hankinson retook the lead at 63-62 before Derek Burchill fouled out with 4:26 left to go. The Hi-Liners responded well to adversity, thanks in large part to Van Dyke. After a controversial fifth foul was called on Hankinson’s Alex Althoff, the game was at 68-68. Trent Egan made what proved to be the game-winning shot with 34 seconds left and the Hi-Liners held on for the 70-68 win.
Burchill led the Hi-Liners with 16 points while Ost came off the bench to score 14. Van Dyke and Matt Jorissen finished with 10 each. As a team, Valley City made seven 3-pointers. Danny Hangaard led the Pirates with 19 points, while Althoff added 15. With the win, Valley City improves to 10-3, while Hankinson falls to a record of 9-5.
